First Top Water Redfish of 2007!

We did it again! On Saturday April 28th I took Brian Cilinski and Father in Law Ellis redfishing out of Wrightsville Beach. Brian and Ellis are two great guys and they both caught their first redfish on top water plugs that day.

The weather on Saturday was perfect and we got an early start while the tide was still high. With the water being full and falling we began the morning casting Redfish Magic Spinnerbaits and MirrOlure Top Dog Jr. plugs in color # 808. I got both fellas "walking the dog"
in the first hour and we caught three beautiful reds on the topwater plug. The strikes were ferocious and one was so close to the boat when it struck that it scared him and got him wet! As the tide fell out the backcountry creeks began to get really clear and we began sight fishing the schools we found.

With the lower water and clear conditions the wind came and went a little and we managed to stay on two schools of fish around 100 strong each. By 11am we had released five redfish and we were hunting some tailers on a gin clear turtlegrass flat. Ellis caught the last fish of the day at around six pounds and did a great job sight casting with Brian to their first reds of the year and my first topwater fish of the year.

Great work guys I really enjoyed my time with you.

Good Luck & Good Fishing!

Rumors of Bonita...

Fishing is firing off again with the passing of the Easter Holiday cold front. It was great seeing some old friends over the Easter holiday, Ollie Smith of Blue Ridge Anglers in Boone, NC was down here with his family as was Cameron Barker and it was a real treat catching up as always.
The latest is there is a strong concentration of Bonita showing up in the mouth of the New River Inlet and the bite is definitely an early morning event with the fishing slowing down after 7:30am. Don't sweat it if this is bad news and you can't get there to fish because there are scattered reports of anglers catching fish on and off of the Liberty Ship straight out of Masonboro Inlet to the North.
If you were surprised to hear that the blue fin showed up the other day think of how surprised the Bonita were to find out the blue fin were in town... Try fishing Maria jigs in 14grams or 7 grams in pink or blue as well as sting silvers and hydrometal jigs of the same color. I like a 7'6" medium action Lamiglas in the 8-17 lb. range for long distance casts and sure fire hook ups.
Give Captain's Stuart Caulder, Jon Huff or Lee Parsons a call for charter availability to chase these wonderful game fish.

Good luck and Good Fishing!

Rogers Boys Redfishing Trip

I had the pleasure of taking Mark and Dustin Rogers, (father and son), fishing on April 2nd for Dustin's birthday and we managed to find a very large school of redfish near Topsail Island. This was Mark's first time sight fishing for redfish from a flats boat and boy was he excited when that first fish took his artificial bait.
I had Dustin fishing a DOA jerk bait in rootbeer chartreuse on a Mustad 3/0 ultra point weedless rig. Mark was fishing the same rig with a new penny colored DOA jerk bait. We were using 16# Gamma flourocarbon attached to 15# green Power pro on Lamiglas XPS 704 series spinning rods and Quantum Catalyst size 30 spinning reels.
The technique we used involved waiting for the school to come at the boat and present the artificial in front of the lead fish about two feet. Once the school had encountered the bait the boys would twitch the jerk bait twice and immediately pick up the slack line with one turn of the reel handle. Each time we had the school within range of a cast we repeated this tactic with incredible success. We finished the afternoon with about six fish to the boat the largest one was six pounds and we had a nice double hook-up at the end.
I did notice that with the initial excitement of seeing all of these redfish that the guys were reeling their baits too fast. If you encounter this situation remember to stay cool and slow down your presentation a little.
We had a great time on the water and I was very proud to spend that afternoon fishing with two great guys. Get out on the water with your friends and family and enjoy the great spring fishery we are having here in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

We'll see you on the water,
